Some Recent Progress in Multiscale Modeling

چکیده
In recent years we have seen an explosive growth of activities in multiscale modeling and computation, with applications in many areas including material science, fluid mechanics, chemistry, and biology. It is widely recognized that multiscale techniques will become an essential part of computational science and engineering. The main purpose of the present paper is to review some (not all) of these progresses, with a view toward building systematic, reliable and controlled multiscale techniques for a variety of applications. The basic set-up will be the following. We are given a system whose microscopic behavior, with state variable u, is described by a given microscopic model. This microscopic model is too inefficient to be used in full detail. On the other hand, we are only interested in the macroscopic behavior of the system, described by the state variable U . U and u are linked together by a compression operator Q: U = Qu.

Investigation of Vacancy Defects on the Young’s Modulus of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composites in Axial Direction via a Multiscale Modeling Approach
In this article, the influence of various vacancy defects on the Young’s modulus of carbon nanotube (CNT) - reinforcement polymer composite in the axial direction is investigated via a structural model in ANSYS software. Their high strength can be affected by the presence of defects in the nanotubes used as reinforcements in practical nanocomposites. Molecular structural mechanics (MSM)/finite ...
متن کاملVariational Multiscale Residual-driven Turbulence Modeling for Large Eddy Simulation of Incompressible Flow
The objectives of recent variational multiscale work in turbulence have been to capture all scales consistently and to avoid use of eddy viscosities altogether. This holds the promise of more accurate and efficient LES procedures. In this work, we describe a new variational multiscale formulation, which makes considerable progress toward these goals.
متن کاملMultiscale modeling of macromolecular biosystems
In this article, we review the recent progress in multiresolution modeling of structure and dynamics of protein, RNA and their complexes. Many approaches using both physics-based and knowledge-based potentials have been developed at multiple granularities to model both protein and RNA. Coarse graining can be achieved not only in the length, but also in the time domain using discrete time and di...
متن کاملMultiscale modeling of biological functions.
Recent years have witnessed a tremendous explosion in computational power, which in turn has resulted in great progress in the complexity of the biological and chemical problems that can be addressed by means of all-atom simulations. Despite this, however, our computational time is not infinite, and in fact many of the key problems of the field were resolved long before the existence of the cur...
متن کاملModeling and Simulation in Composite Materials: Integration from Nanostructure to Component-Level Design
The current special issue topic ‘‘modeling and simulation in composite materials’’ is intended to capture the recent advancements in the area of modeling and simulation in composite materials. The articles that appear under this topic describe theoretical models, molecular mechanics methods, finite-element methods, and multiscale methods for mechanical and thermal properties of composite materi...
